Summit Expedited Logistics helps boost economy, reduce emissions as SmartWay Transport Partner
Third-party logistics provider reups commitment to EPA partnership for eighth year
CHICAGO (Sept. 21, 2020) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent approval of Summit Expedited Logistics’ 2019 emissions reporting qualified the transportation management leader for its eighth consecutive year as a SmartWay Transport Partner.

As freight activity in the United States increases, experts predict that by 2040, growth in air emissions from freight will exceed growth in emissions from all other transportation activities, including passenger transportation. The mission of the voluntary, public-private SmartWay program is to make a positive impact on the economy by saving money spent on fuel while reducing emissions.

“The Summit team has always prided ourselves on delivering high-quality, flexible transportation solutions,” said Truckload Brokerage Services Director, Ron Tessendorf. “The decision to maintain our commitment to environmental sustainability through an ongoing partnership with the EPA underscores that desire to provide solutions—not only for the good of our customers, but also our teammates and the global community.”

SmartWay Transport Partner tools measure progress toward fewer emissions and cleaner air. Each year, program participants submit performance data to qualify for continued partnership. Since 2004, SmartWay has helped partners avoid emitting 134 million tons of air pollution, 280 million barrels of oil and $37.5 billion in fuel costs.

This year marks the EPA’s 50th anniversary, and the SmartWay program’s 16th. Today, more than 3,700 organizations support the SmartWay program, including major transportation industry associations, environmental groups, state and local governments, international agencies, and the corporate community.
